They say in Hollywood that there’s no such thing as “bad press,” but the corporate world tends to differ. Someone up-echelon at Target right now is wondering whether to issue a public clarification of store policy or just let the whole thing slide and hope that nobody notices.

What am I on about this time? Oh, this: **

CHESAPEAKE – Two Marines in their dress uniforms – the ones with white hats, khaki shirts and blue trousers with red stripe – say they were accused of recruiting at a Target department store here and told to leave.

“We weren’t recruiting,” according to Cpl. Carlos Rodriguez, 22, who said he returned in October from his second combat tour in Iraq. “I just popped in to say hi to a guy I went to high school with. He works there.”

But an assistant manager who saw Rodriguez and the other Marine apparently thought otherwise and showed them the door, according to both servicemen.

Target already had a bit of an image problem – gifted readers will remember their 2004 “grinching” ** of the Salvation Army – and it’s hard to imagine that tossing combat veterans from the floor space for the audacity of wearing a dress uniform will improve it much.

“Solicitation” indeed.

So, assistant manager at Target: Another job that the rest of us are apparently over-qualified for.
